What SD-WAN is
SD-WAN (software-defined wide area network) is a way of connecting offices and cloud services over ordinary internet connections, with software deciding the best path for each type of traffic. A small appliance at each site manages one or more connections, monitors their quality and steers traffic accordingly. Voice calls take the cleanest line, backups use spare capacity, and if one connection fails traffic moves to another.
When it helps on the island
- Several sites. A head office in Douglas with a branch in Ramsey, a shop in Peel or a warehouse in Braddan, all needing access to the same systems.
- More than one connection. Combining lines from different island providers so a fault on one does not take the site offline.
- Heavy use of cloud services. Microsoft 365, Teams and cloud phone systems all perform better when the network prioritises them.
- Sites off the island. Businesses with UK or overseas offices can link them securely without expensive private circuits.
What it replaces
Traditionally, multi-site businesses linked offices with private leased lines or MPLS circuits, or with VPN tunnels between firewalls. SD-WAN can use cheaper internet connections while still giving reliable performance, and makes adding a new site much simpler. Whether it saves money depends on what you pay for today.
Security
Most SD-WAN appliances include a firewall and encrypt traffic between sites. Some vendors combine SD-WAN with cloud-delivered security, often called SASE, so remote staff get the same protection as office staff. Security settings still need designing and managing properly.
When you probably do not need it
A single office with a handful of staff usually gets more from a good firewall, a reliable main connection and a backup line from a second provider. SD-WAN earns its keep when there are several sites, several connections or demanding real-time applications.
Questions to answer first
- How many sites, and what do they need to reach?
- Which applications are sensitive to delay, such as phones and video calls?
- What connections are available at each site, and from which providers?
- What happens to the business if a site goes offline for a day?
Common questions
Does SD-WAN make my internet faster?
Not on its own, but it makes better use of the connections you have and keeps important traffic flowing when a line is congested or fails.
Can SD-WAN work with a cloud phone system?
Yes, and it often improves call quality by prioritising voice. See our guide to cloud phone systems vs PBX.
